YMCA Takes Precautions Against
H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu)
The safety and well being of our YMCA children, members and staff is a top priority. H1N1 is not a cause for panic, but we feel the responsibility to take additional precautions in all programs.
Symptoms
H1N1 causes symptoms similar to seasonal flu and can include:
- Fever over 100°F
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Body aches
- Headache
- Chills
- Fatigue
And in some cases:
WHAT YOU CAN DO . . .
Wash your Hands
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer
- Clean your hands after coughing or sneezing. Use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
Cover your Cough
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and then immediately throw it away.
- If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve.
- Wash your hands.
Sanitize
- Sanitize your hands before and after working out on fitness equipment. When you are finished with a piece of equipment, and wipe it down. Wipe down exercise mats as well
Avoidance
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay Home
- Contact your Doctor
- Those with flu-like symptoms should stay home and keep the illness contained
- Wait at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever before returning
- Inform the YMCA if you are diagnosed with H1N1 or some other contagious illness, as we will need to notify other members
WHAT WE ARE DOING . . .
In addition to the hygienic actions above, we are taking precautions for the following:
Child Care
- Child Care and Maintenance staff are vigilantly cleaning toys, mats, cribs, cots, doorknobs, hand rails and all other surfaces that people are in contact with. The YMCA child care staff will also increase the frequency of hand washing. Parents are requested to assist us with this process by washing children’s hands upon entering.
General Members
- Department and Maintenance staff are vigilantly cleaning counter tops, locker rooms, restrooms, doorknobs, hand rails, keyboards, telephones, and all other surfaces that people are in contact with.
- Hand sanitizers have been placed on walls located throughout the facilities.
Staff
- We are directing staff to stay home if they are feeling symptoms.
