Exton, PA — Sixteen-year-old Nick Pease of Exton uses
scouting to give back to the community. The Bishop Shanahan High
School Junior is working on becoming an Eagle Scout for Exton
Troop 65. Pease, along with a group of fellow scouts and friends
teamed up to raise money and build four benches for the YMCA’s
sports field.
In June, they staged a carwash at the YMCA located on Devon
Drive in Exton that netted nearly $250 in seed money for the
project. Jim Graham, owner of Outside Insight, an Exton construction
company, donated building materials worth $300 and assisted with
the planning, design and construction of the benches.
Pease, Graham and 12 other volunteers spent an entire Saturday
in July constructing the benches. More than 100 hours of community
service were invested in the project.
“The Y needed benches. As a family who uses the YMCA,
we thought this would be a great opportunity to give something
back,” said, James Pease, Nick’s father and Assistant
Scout Master of his troop. The Pease family has been affiliated
with the Lionville Community YMCA since Nick was in preschool.
He participated in summer day camp, swimming lessons and youth
soccer.
The YMCA and the Pease family thank all of the members who supported
the car wash and helped Nick execute his plan.
The new benches serve as a reminder of how valuable volunteerism
is to the YMCA and the community. The Exton teen is looking forward
to getting his Eagle Scout award in the spring of 2007.
Scouting and the YMCA have been community partners since the
1890’s. For more information about service projects or
