YMCA Opens New Wellness Center
Center will help area youth win the battle against obesity with
innovative equipment
BERWYN, PA — September 3, 2008, The Upper Main Line YMCA
is pleased to announce the grand opening of its Youth and Teen
Wellness Center on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Noon.
The recently upgraded center is home to more than 30 pieces
of equipment including interactive exer-gaming consoles, Dance
Dance Revolution (DDR) and Expresso video bikes. The centerpiece
is the new seven piece Strive® Kidz SmartTM strength training
circuit. Sized just right for smaller users, the circuit offers
a safe resistance-training alternative to adult sized machines.
In order to use the center, a free orientation taught by certified
instructors is offered daily.
The Upper Main Line YMCA serves nearly 1,500 families with youth
between the ages of 10 and 14. “With one out of every four
children overweight or obese, our goal is to get young people
moving again,” said YMCA Wellness Director Christine Gallagher. “We
believe the Youth and Teen Wellness Center will provide a safe
place for kids to get fit using not only traditional cardiovascular
and weight training equipment, but also the new interactive stations.” The
center will be open daily from 3 to 9:00 p.m. and 9 to 4:00 p.m.
on weekends.
“The YMCA is the place to learn about healthy living,” Gallagher
added. The center will also host a variety of focused classes
that will educate and engage young people with the goal of creating
habits of life-long wellness. “Financial assistance is
available to qualified individuals and families. We want to help
stop the epidemic of overweight and obesity in our teens.”
The public is invited to tour the new facility beginning September
6, 2008. The Youth and Teen Wellness Center is the latest facility
enhancement in a series of planned facility improvements. Last
year, the YMCA opened its doors to a new 8,500 square foot Adult
Wellness Center, expanded Group Exercise/Cycling and Dance studios,
a babysitting area and an on-site WiFi Café for quick
snacks, meals and Internet access.
