UPPER MAIN LINE YMCA GETS APPROVALS TO START FACILITY RENOVATION
Devon, PA – December 7, 2005, Eastown Township Board of Supervisors gave the YMCA the go-ahead to start construction on a new $10 million three story addition to its current facility.
The renovation and addition project, expected to break ground in the Spring of 2006 will include a new 3-story 30,000 square foot structure with a ground level entrance. The new building which will replace the structure that contains rooms 4 and 5 will house Member Services, Childcare and wellness space—an entire floor for cardio and weights.
The plans include a new elevator, which will also provide service to the Cassatt Mansion.
The elevator and ground-level entrance will improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and parents with small children. The locker room scheme will change to include revamped areas specifically for youth and adults and the addition of four family changing rooms with all the amenities.
The project will begin, however, in the parking lot where traffic and storm water management will be addressed. The entrance of the facility will move further down Berwyn-Paoli Road and what is now a seldom-used access road will become the exit. One way in and one way out. Parking will be expanded by 100 spaces and islands with upgraded lighting will be added. New traffic patterns will be imposed within the facility to reduce the stacking of traffic during peak hours such as camp drop-off and pick-up. Underground tanks will be installed to manage water runoff.
This renovation and addition project is Phase 1 of a multi-phase plan. The YMCA is in the process of a $4 million capital campaign. Financing and the Y’s operating budget will cover the remaining tab for the project.
With branches at each end of the Conestoga Trail, the YMCA of the Upper Main Line has been serving the community with programs and services to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities since 1962.
