UPPER MAIN LINE YMCA COMMEMORATES ITS FIRST FACILITY WITH A PLAQUE AT T/E MIDDLE

SCHOOL

BERWYN, PA –October 15, 1962, the Upper Main Line YMCA opened its doors for the first time in rented space on the campus of the Tredyffryn/Easttown Junior High School. On Friday, October 15, 2004, the Upper Main Line commemorated the event with a ceremony at the original site, now the T/E Middle School. A plaque with the inscription ‘Original Location of the Upper Main Line YMCA, founded October 15, 1962 at T/E Junior High School’ will be placed on the façade of the middle school.

YMCA CEO, Joe Tankle hosted the ceremony. Distinguished guests and speakers included Vince Stach, the Chairman of the YMCA’s Capital Campaign, along with Robert Borst, Jenny Warren, Esther Hurley and other active volunteers to the early development of the YMCA. Local historian C. Herbert Fry shared information about the old YMCA, which was housed in the junior high building – later replaced by the middle school. Additionally, Pat wood, the Vice President of the T/E School board spoke of the ongoing collaboration between the school district and the YMCA.

The Y Changes Lives. Now located on Berwyn-Paoli Road in Berwyn, the Upper Main Line YMCA has grown from a handful of users at the T/E location in 1962, to a vital community resource with more than 20,000 users of its programs and services.
